Chronological-Alphabetical Bibliography of Phenomenological Nursing

This bibliography has been built, first of all, by Googling “nursing” along with “phenomenology,” “hermeneutics,” and “lived experience,” And the last names of the philosophers Hannah ARENDT, Simone de BEAUVOIR, Hubert DREYFUS, Hans Georg GADAMER, Aron GURWITSCH, Klaus HELD, Martin HEIDEGGER, Edmund HUSSERL, Emmanuel LEVINAS, Maurice MERLEAU-PONTY, Paul RICOER, Jean-Paul SARTRE, Alfred SCHUTZ, Edith STEIN, Bernhard WALDENFELS, and Richard M. ZANER. The names of these philosophers occur articles by phenomenological nurses and using this approach may help persuade other phenomenological philosophers to study the work of such nurses. The first ten screens brought up by Google were usually sufficient. In addition, “nursing” was coupled with “Paul COLAIZZI, “Amadeo GEORGI,” and “Max van MANNEN,” whom these nurses also often mention in their titles. Secondly, the bibliographies of the articles that were collected were searched for items that by their theme, authors, and/or outlets seemed relevant even though the above listed figures were not mentioned.

The items are arranged here in two ways, (1) chronological-alphabetical order by author, which already shows something about the development of this school of thought within nursing research, and (2) alphabetical by the last name of the first listed author, which will help one find what else a given author has written. Some items from non-English speaking countries are included already, but much more is “out there” and the hope is that colleagues will send additional bibliographies in other languages. Phenomenology is a multilingual tradition. These additional bibliographies can be sent to me (embree@fau.edu), but please be patient about how long it may take for the additions to be made here.

All best,

Lester Embree
